The Urban Squirrel's Fitness Blog

My friend is ready to start playing tennis again.
He sent me a text saying something like Are you ready to lose all your matches this year again?
My answer is yes!
Because I’m not good with my eating. I have the idea to start a blog and I’ll photograph everything I eat. I’ll have a clearer picture about what I’m doing wrong.
I ran thrice in 3 days. Friday night, I did my 10k. Yesterday, I ran 3K in 24:37. It’s a 8:13 min (13:13 min/mi) pace at an average of 139 bpm heart rate. Today, I ran 5,16 km in 45:19, 8:47 min/km (14:08 min/mi) and 143 average hr.
I’ll just put some emphasis on the last two runs. Basically it was supposed to be at 140 bpm and it’s pretty much ok with those runs but the first one was at a really faster pace than the second one. Why? Maybe my body tells me I need to rest but if it’s that, it’s the first time I can see the effect of too much training on my body.
I went to buy some GU for my next race and decided to go to a new store. I’ve been to several running stores in my quest to find my perfect shoes. In some of those stores, I just don’t feel comfortable in them because of my weight. At the second you step in the store, they are all looking at you with a WTF look on their face. In other stores, you just feel like you’re at home. The new store I wen to to felt like home. It’s my new running heaven. They have stuff that others don’t like books (more than 1 or 2 like the other running stores here), and yoga dvds for runners, etc. I think I even found the next pair of shoes I’ll buy. The Asics Kayano or something like that.
The scenery is awesome too. I’ll probably go there once in a while to participate in one of those free running groups they offer.

On a totally different subject, I made a small video yesterday just to test my tablet. At one point, I talked and if I didn’t know it was me doing the talking I would never have recognized my voice.
Last week, I missed a 5K because I felt I wasn’t ready and I was afraid it could be the same for my next official 10K. So tonight, even if it wasn’t on my program I ran a 10K just to test myself.
So I ran 10K in 1:16:09. It’s my third best result for a 10K and my best one is only 49 seconds faster. I feel I will totally PR it in three weeks.
Not enough words, I’ll add a picture or two

Sorry for the lack of updates lately but I was “fringed”. I started to watch season 2 and I just couldn’t stop enough time to blog. I’m currently mid way through season 3 but I’m not as hooked on it than on season 2.
I didn’t go to a 5K I was registered to. I wasn’t ready for it. I have a 10K in 4 weeks. I’ll work harder and I won’t miss it.
I ran several times since my back problems and last post. Something like 4-5 or 6. I’m still following my program. Most of my runs are at 140 bpm with some faster intervals.
On a positive side, I now consider my foot healed. I had pain and trouble for more than 6 months. I even had it x rayed because I thought I could have a stress fracture. After changing my shoes, the pain disappeared.
Tonight is The Avengers night !
I ran a little bit. Around 2 Km. Felt good, no pais except some itching where I had my back sticky bandage. As soon as I finished the run, I took it off.
I don’t know how it happened but I think I injured my back while watching TV. Well I say my back it’s actually one rib and it hurts when I try to take a deep breath.
That means no running for a couple of days until I don’t feel pain when breathing
I feel stupid

I have two runs I didn’t post about.
The first one was last Sunday. 60 minutes at my training speed which is 9:20 min/km (15:01 min/mi). I managed to run 6,43 km (3.995 mi) at an average hr of 131 bpm (71% of max).
It was a good run but for some reason, at about half of it, my heart rate began to go up. I had to slightly slow down to maintain my heart rate. I can’t really explain it, maybe a slight unnoticeable “hill” or maybe it’s at that point I began to be tired but I didn’t really liked that. I even got over a 10:00 min/km pace at some point (16:05 min/mi).
Yesterday was a 40 minute run with 2 X 3 minute intervals at 10K speed. 10K speed is around 7:30 min/mi (12:04 min/mi). I ran a total of 4:41 km (2.74 min/mi) at an average hr of 133 bpm (72% of max)
Again, at about half the run, my hr started to go up so I slowed down to stabilize it. It’s at that moment I crossed a group of maybe 10 runners going my way. This is one good way to feel like shit.
At that point, I had some doubts about my program. I feel some beneficial thing after a run but I really don’t like going over a 10:00 min/km pace. I was at that speed when I began running and I had some walking parts in it. So maybe I’m not going fast enough. On all the sites I read since I started my program, it says that my steady state speed should be somewhere between 70-85% of my max hr. Even the guy who wrote the book I used wrote that on a different site. I’ll try running at a slightly higher speed on my next runs, I will be aiming for a 140 bpm hr. I’ll also try a different route to see if At some point, my heart rate goes up too.
Here’s one of the sites I’m using to help me calculate my speed.

If it can help you, I’ll be happy.
